History

Silhouetted against the azure sky with open arms of welcome, in the serene town of Villupuram on the strategic highway connecting Chennai with Pondicherry, stands Sacred Heart Convent A.I. Hr. Sec. School a Eighty one year CSST legacy of knowledge and virtue.

In 1887, the Foundress of the Institution, Mother Teresa of St.Rose of  Lima, was commissioned to start  a congregation of Carmelite sisters in Ernakulam, Kerala. The ministries of the congregation were confined to the state of Kerala until 1938, when a proposal was mooted by Dr.Colas, Bishop of Pondicherry  to begin a school in Villupuram for its large catholic Anglo-Indian community. Mother Mary, the then Superior General condescended and out of the sylvan environs of emerald Ernakulam, ventured the pioneer quartet on their maiden journey to Villupuram, a typically torrid, tropical terrain on the western coast.

A sizeable house, La Fons bungalow with its three, acres of adjoining land belonging to the French Mission of Pondicherry was given to the sisters. La Fons is Sacred Heart today, a teeming academic hub.

The school is one of the oldest in the region and it continues to be one of the premium educational institutions in the district. The pioneers began a system of skill based learning system. The education system now has evolved into an effective curriculum according to the present day educational requirements.

Sacred Heart Anglo-Indian Hr. Sec. School has a fine infrastructure with 66 spacious classrooms provided with digital monitors, furnished computer rooms, auditorium, well equipped laboratories, a voluminous Library, a multipurpose hall, a large play ground and indoor basket ball court. The feeder Kindergarten is located in a different campus a little farther away from the main school.

The school has a strength of 3208, of which 1735 are girls and 1473 are boys, with 103 teaching staff and 31 non-teaching staff. The school students are divided into four houses the Marians, Florians, Josephites and Teresians to facilitate internal sports and co-curricular activities The feasts of the patron saints remind the students of values. A wide range of activities like Scouts and Guides, Tarumitra, USM, Junior Red Cross and AIDS Awareness programmes impart a spirit of service and sacrifice in the young minds. Celebrations like the Independence day, Republic day, Sports day, Annual day and Christmas are times of rejoicing coupled with valuable messages. The Sports history of the school is a matter of pride with many sports stars with State and National honours. A spirited School Band triggers cheer on festive occasions. The students take active part in disaster relief measures, rallies, science exhibition and many academic and art competitions to endorse the knowledge and virtue ideal and to bring laurels to the school. As part of social work, a near-by village, Anichampalayam, was adopted by the school and in times of need, natural calamities and festive occasions, clothes and other essentials are distributed.

An array of internal competitions from craft to culinary art prepares children for practical life. Students take part in rallies, science exhibitions, quiz competitions, painting and drawing competitions and bring laurels to the school. The educational endeavour of Sacred Heart is value based, with a resolute commitment to mould students into mature, social conscious, God fearing, responsible citizens, ignited with a spirit of optimism, peace and goodwill. PLATINUM JUBILEE ( 1938 – 2013):

In the year 2012-13, Sacred Heart Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School stepped into the Platinum year having completed 75 years. A three day programme was organised to mark the milestone event. The Platinum year inauguration commenced with Sr.Theodosia lighting the lamp and the nominated Anglo-Indian MLA Dr.Nancy Ann Francis presiding over the day. The jubilee finale came up with a three day extravaganza organised to thank the Almighty, the noble pioneers, all the good hearts and with a renewed commitment to continue in the mission of the Foundress. A documentary named ‘Indelible Imprints’ capturing 75 years of Sacred Heart’s evolution and a commemorative souvenir named ‘A Vision with a Mission’ were released. Some of the dignitaries that participated in the three day programme include Fr.Cornou M.E.P., Archbishop of Pondicherry-Cuddalore Archdiocese. Archbishop Rt.Rev.Antony Anandarayar, the District Collector, Mr.Sampath, Mr.Pandian I.R.S and Dr.Lakshmanan MP.
